Childbirth Education Classes

Classes for expecting parents


Penny offers several types of birth classes:

  • An 8 week series for women/couples planning to give birth in a hospital
  • A 6 week series for those who are planning to give birth outside the hospital (home or birth center). Sandy Szalay, April Bolding, and Penny alternate in teaching these classes.

Hospital Childbirth Education Classes

Sponsored by Great Starts, a program of Parent Trust for Washington Children.

This class is designed for families expecting their first baby or parents who have not attended childbirth classes before or in many years. This complete course includes:

  • Information about normal childbirth
  • Common labor variations and interventions, including cesarean birth
  • Information on medication/anesthesia for pain relief and cesarean birth
  • Breastfeeding
  • Newborn care
  • Labor coping techniques, comfort measures, relaxation skills and breathing patterns are practiced during class.

This class meets weekly for eight (8) 2-hour weekday evening sessions and once for a postpartum reunion.

Class Fee: $250/couple

Sibling Class

Sponsored by Great Starts, a program of Parent Trust for Washington Children.

A one-evening preparation class for children who are about to greet a new baby into their family. Parents are included in this class which encompasses information on pregnancy, birth, and new babies presented at a young child's learning level. This class is appropriate for ages 2 and older.

This class meets for one hour almost every month at the Community Birth and Family Center in the Montlake neighborhood in Seattle.  A class within a month or so of your due date is recommended.

Class Fee: $20/family with one child and $5 for each additional child attending

The Birth Partner, 3rd Edition
A Complete Guide to Childbirth for Dads, Doulas, and Other Labor Companions
